About the IPMA: History & Mission

Over 90 Years of Service to Podiatric Medicine and to the Public

The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) was registered with the State of Illinois in 1915 as the Illinois Association of Chiropodists. In 1987, it officially became known as the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association.

As an organization designed to support Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), (or podiatric physicians or podiatrists), the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) has grown and developed into the major source for foot and ankle health care information for the public and is active in the Illinois legislature regarding foot and ankle care issues and access to foot and ankle care by podiatric physicians. The IPMA is an advocate for all citizens of Illinois as well as for its member doctors.

As Abraham Lincoln so aptly stated, “If my feet hurt, I can’t think!”

The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association is a component of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). Established in 1912, the American Podiatric Medical Association is the premier professional organization representing the nation’s Doctors of Podiatric Medicine. The APMA represents a vast majority of the estimated 15,000 podiatrists in the country. Within APMA’s umbrella of organizations are fifty-three component societies in the individual states and other jurisdictions, as well as twenty-two affiliated and related societies. APMA’s national headquarters is in Bethesda, Maryland.
