Association Overview and Structure

The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) is a non-profit organization representing a majority of the doctors of podiatric medicine in the state of Illinois currently located in downtown Chicago, IL. 

The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association is a component of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). Established in 1912, the American Podiatric Medical Association is the premier professional organization representing the nation’s Doctors of Podiatric Medicine. The APMA represents a vast majority of the estimated 15,000 podiatrists in the country. Within APMA’s umbrella of organizations are fifty-three component societies in the individual states and other jurisdictions, as well as twenty-two affiliated and related societies. APMA’s national headquarters is in Bethesda, Maryland . 

The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) was registered with the State of Illinois in 1915 as the Illinois Association of Chiropodists. In 1987, it officially became known as the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association.

As an organization designed to support Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), (or podiatric physicians or podiatrists), the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) has grown and developed into the major source for foot and ankle health care information for the public and is active in the Illinois legislature regarding foot and ankle care issues and access to foot and ankle care by podiatric physicians. The IPMA is an advocate for all citizens of Illinois as well as for its member doctors.

Position Overview:

Executive Director (ED) will be the chief administrative officer of the Association and shall report to and be responsible to the Board of Directors.   He or she will manage a staff of 6-8 individuals, serve as the Midwest Podiatry Conference (MPC) Executive Director and will work exclusively for the IPMA and MPC.  The ED will work on a day to day basis in conjunction with the President of the Association as well as the other officers of the Association who are elected for one year terms under the direction of the Board of Directors.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Responsibilities shall include:

·       Serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Association, providing guidance and thought leadership to the core functions of the organization.

·       Maintain association staff – have authority to hire, compensate and terminate the Association staff within the framework of the approved Association budget and based on the needs of the Association determined in conjunction with the Executive Council (EC).  Maintain the inner workings of the Association. 

·       Maintain a working relationship with staff and the day to day workings of a professional association

·       Maintain respect among staff and establish an efficient and productive workplace with positive reinforcement

·       Maintain a professional and respectful relationship with physician members

·       Maintain a working relationship with the APMA and other organizations and associations that the IPMA interacts with.

·       With approval of the EC, retain outside legal counsel, public relations counsel, financial counsel, legislative council and other consultants for the Association based on the needs of the Association and within the approved budget of the Association.  The ED will work with these consultants on behalf of the Association and represent the directives of the Board.

·       Respect the goals of the Board and put forth full effort in achieving those goals

·       Attend and assist in all EC and Board meetings including planning the agendas with the President, creating the minutes with the Secretary and serving as consultant to meeting protocol during the meetings based on the Association By-laws and Policy and Procedure.

·       Be responsible for the financial well-being of the Association and acting as the Chief Financial Officer or delegating that responsibility as directed by the Board.

·       Act as Executive Director and staff supervisor for the Midwest Podiatry Conference based on their Association By-laws.

·       Prepare monthly financial reports and meeting minutes in a timely fashion

·       Oversee employees and give direction on their responsibilities and expectations

·       Establish and maintain relationships with other medical associations

·       Weekend travel and evening meetings are often required and are a part of the ED’s responsibilities.


An ideal Candidate will:

·       Have an advanced degree

·       Be business savy and have business management experience

·       Have significant leadership skills and experience

·       Be innovative and have established themselves as a problem solver

·       Be a visionary leader and strategic thinker

·       Understand the importance of confidentiality

·       Have the ability to develop relationships with multiple generations of podiatrists.

·       Be articulate with some experience of public speaking

·       Have a sense of accountability and willing to accept responsibility for mistakes

·       Be goal oriented and have a strong sense of responsibility

·       Respectful of deadlines and able to set priorities

·       Have general accounting experience

·       Have the ability to both work with a budget and accommodate special projects

·       Have human resource skills

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

·       Previous experience with a professional association

·       Be a certified association executive

·       Experience within podiatric medicine

·       Legal interaction or experience

·       Legislative interaction or experience

·       Fundraising experience

·       Experience working with a non-profit foundation

·       Experience in corporate development

·       Established contacts with medical and/or political organizations
